The 12 Days of Oral Health: Daily Tips for a Bright Smile This Holiday Season

6 min read

The festive season is here, and with it comes holiday treats, social gatherings, and plenty of reasons to smile! Amongst the joy of Christmas, it’s easy to overlook our oral hygiene, but we’re here to help you stay on track. To help you keep your smile sparkling and healthy, Face Value Dental is sharing 12 days of easy, practical tips. Let’s ensure your teeth stay merry and bright this holiday season!

Day 1: Don't Skip the Brush & Floss

It’s easy to fall out of routine during the busy holiday period, but brushing twice a day and flossing daily are essential for maintaining good oral hygiene. Consistent brushing helps remove plaque and prevent cavities. At Face Value Dental in Brisbane City, we recommend using fluoride toothpaste for the best results.

Day 2: Choose Healthy Holiday Snacks

While festive treats are tempting, try to include tooth-friendly snacks like cheese, nuts, and fresh fruits. These options help neutralise acids and provide a boost of vitamins for your gums. A balanced diet supports overall dental health, reducing the need for emergency dental care during the holidays.

Day 3: Stay Hydrated with Water

Keep a water bottle handy during holiday parties. Water not only keeps you hydrated but also rinses away food particles and bacteria, reducing the risk of tooth decay. Drinking plenty of water is one of the simplest ways to support your dental hygiene routine.

Day 4: Be Mindful of Sugary Beverages

Sweet holiday drinks like eggnog, mulled wine, or hot cocoa can be delicious, but they often contain high amounts of sugar. Enjoy them in moderation and rinse your mouth with water afterward. Our Brisbane City dentistry team advises limiting your intake to protect your enamel.

Day 5: Stock Up on Dental Supplies

Running low on toothpaste, floss, or mouthwash? The holidays can get hectic, so make sure you have all your oral hygiene essentials ready. If you need recommendations, Face Value Dental provides a range of dental services and advice on the best products for your needs.

Day 6: Don't Use Your Teeth as Tools

Avoid using your teeth to open packages, crack nuts, or bite into hard candies. Doing so can lead to chips and fractures. Instead, use scissors or nutcrackers. If you experience a dental emergency, Face Value Dental in Brisbane City offers prompt care to get you back to smiling.

Day 7: Practice Moderation with Sticky Sweets

Sticky treats like caramel and toffee can cling to your teeth, making it harder to remove all the sugar. If you indulge, be sure to brush and floss afterward to maintain good oral hygiene. Sticky candies are a common cause of cavities that we often see at Face Value Dental.

Day 8: Book a Post-Holiday Checkup

Start the new year fresh by scheduling a dental checkup at Face Value Dental. A post-holiday visit is a great way to address any potential issues from holiday indulgences. Our Brisbane City dental services cover everything from routine cleanings to more extensive dental care.

Day 9: Protect Your Smile During Summer Sports

As the weather heats up and summer activities like cricket, surfing, and football kick off, don’t forget the importance of wearing a mouthguard. Whether you’re hitting the court or the field, a custom-fitted mouthguard can help protect your teeth from unexpected impacts. Visit our Brisbane City dentists for a personalised fit and better protection.

Day 10: Limit Alcoholic Beverages

Alcoholic drinks, especially those mixed with soda or juice, can be acidic and sugary, leading to enamel erosion. Be mindful of your intake and drink water between sips. Maintaining good oral hygiene helps prevent damage from acidic beverages.

Day 11: Gift an Electric Toothbrush

Looking for a practical gift idea? An electric toothbrush is a fantastic option for anyone who wants to upgrade their oral hygiene routine. It’s a thoughtful gift that keeps on giving, and our Brisbane City dentistry team can help you choose the right one.

Day 12: Smile and Enjoy the Holidays!
