What does a dental hygienist do?
At Face Value Dental we have two registered dental hygienists, Zoe Clarke and Michelle Keepers Heath. Their aim is to help our patients to achieve optimum oral health through prevention of dental disease.
Zoe and Michelle help our patients achieve and maintain a beautiful smile through detection and prevention of gum disease and dental decay. It is usually recommended that patients visit our hygienists for a 40 to 60 minute appointment every six months. During this appointment, the hygienist will perform a thorough scale and clean to remove any plaque, tartar and surfaces stains to help keep gums healthy. Patients with gum disease may need to attend more regularly to keep plaque bacteria and tartar at bay.
Zoe and Michelle can also assist in recommending what dental/oral hygiene products may be suitable for your individual needs. The hygienist will be able to identify and educate you on any genetic, lifestyle or dietary factors that may put you at greater risk of dental disease.
Sports related injuries are extremely common and to avoid major tooth trauma, anyone that plays a contact sport should wear a professionally made mouthguard. Our hygienists take a mould of your teeth and our laboratory makes you a custom fitted mouthguard. Poorly fitting mouthguards purchased from the pharmacy can actually cause more harm than good.
Dental hygienists play a vitally important role in the dental practice. By seeing Zoe or Michelle regularly, you have a greater chance of avoiding major dental issues.
